The Structure of NetGrammar

The conceptual model for NetGrammar includes four levels:

Level I:
Introduction
Level II:
Support
Level III:
Units
Level IV:
Tasks


Level I: Introduction
The Introduction level includes features that introduce the student to the focus of the units. The intended sequence is from left to right, however students can review the features in whatever sequence they prefer. Once students have experienced working on NetGrammar they will determine which sequence works best for them.

About NetGrammar
This section sets the stage for the instructional emphasis of the units. The focus is on letting student get acquainted with the philosophy and overall content.

Topics and Language Functions
This section deals with the different unit topics and specific language function as well as an overview of the content in each unit.

Unit Structure
This feature is designed to introduce you to the organizational structure of the web site. The structure is the same for all units.

Technical Help
This feature contains information to assist users in understanding how to use NetGrammar and overcome technical difficulties.


Level II: Support
The Support Level contains features students can access that are designed to enhance the instruction offered at the Unit Level. These supports are targeted to resources that are tied to the various units.

Irregular Verbs
Irregular verbs charts focus on frequently used verbs used throughout each unit. These charts provide a clear visual reference for irregular verbs in English.

Phrasal Verbs

This section provides useful information about common phrasal verbs in English. There will be lists of those key features about these verbs. This will serve as a reference source.

Spelling Rules

This section shows lists of spelling rules for the different tenses in English. That is, there will be lists with spelling rules for the present progressive, simple present (third-person singular), simple past tense for regular verbs, comparative and superlative adjectives, adverbs, and directed questions.

Pronunciation Rules

This section will show the pronunciation rules of plural nouns and regular verbs.There is also pronunciation rules for simple present tense (third-person singular), and simple past tense of regular verbs. There is audio to listen to the correct pronunciation of verbs.

Glossary
At the Support Level, the Glossary is a composite of the grammatical terms appearing in each unit. Each entry in the glossary is defined in a manner directly related to its use in the units.



Level III: Units
The instructional units are the heart of NetGrammar. There will be fifteen units. Whereas Levels I and II contain support features that are resources and that relate to the total NetGrammar, Level III contains the units for the teaching components.

The features in Levels I and II are informational in nature. The units in level III are designed to both engage and inform students. They provide the learning experiences. Each unit is independent, but at the same time interrelated with other units. Each unit includes 5 sets of resources such as Preview, Grammar Focus, Listening, Reading, Writing and Review .


Preview
This section provides the student the most detailed reference on what will be covered in a unit through goals, grammar notes and a "Warm-up" activity.


Grammar Focus  

This will have the major explanations of the different grammar points for the unit. You will find examples as well as various uses of the grammar structures in context..



Listening  

This section contains easy-to difficult listening passages. It allows students listen to lots of realistic passages, with different speakers, different accents, and different topics. There is also Weblinks containing extra listening practice outside of NetGrammar. The RealPlayer plug-in is needed



Reading  
This section contains reading passages with various topics. There are pre-reading activities as well as vocabulary activities. Students have the opportunity to practice skimming ands scanning reading skills.



Writing  

This section have learners practice what they have learned in the unit by different writing tasks. Most of the tasks relate to the reading passages and the grammar points in each unit. The students have the opportunity to share their writing with their instructor as well as with friends via the mailer.



Review  

The intent is not only to test the grammar points in the unit, but also to review the different grammatical structures. The students have the opportunity to send the results to the instructor and friends.





Level IV Tasks  
The self-testing tasks are designed to allow students to further practice the content learned in the different units. These tasks test the form, meaning, and use of the grammar content of all the units.
There is also a section called "Weblinks" which are ESL grammar resources available on the Internet. These resources are being developed by ESL educators. The last section contains many exercises that can be printed for class use.
